Typhoon Champi, the 30th named storm of the season, is moving north and could affect Jeju Island from this weekend, according to 헤드라인제주. As of October 21, the storm was traveling northwest over waters roughly 620 kilometers southeast of Taipei, Taiwan.

The typhoon is classified as "strength 4," with a central pressure of 920 hectopascals and maximum winds of 53 meters per second, 헤드라인제주 reports. Forecasters expect it to come within about 330 kilometers south of Seogwipo by 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 25.

After that, the storm is projected to track toward Kagoshima, Japan, and weaken into an extratropical cyclone on October 26, according to the same report.

Jeju is bracing for what would be its first typhoon of the year. 제민일보 reported that fire authorities on the island have strengthened emergency response measures ahead of the storm's possible arrival.

Other Korean outlets have also been tracking the system. 조선일보 noted that Champi could bring the country its first October typhoon in 12 years, with possible effects on southern regions and Jeju, while 한겨레 reported that the storm is expected to make its closest approach on October 25. 이데일리 highlighted the powerful winds accompanying the typhoon.

What to watch next: whether Champi's forecast track shifts as it nears Jeju, and how island authorities adjust their emergency posture over the weekend.
